Visitor Visa

Temporary Travel - Visitor Visa and Visitor Record

In Canada, visitors can enter the country either with a visitor visa or a visitor record, depending on their nationality and purpose of visit. Here are the main types:

  • Temporary Resident Visa - TRV - A visitor visa, also known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), is a document placed in your passport that allows you to travel to Canada. It's required for citizens of certain countries who wish to visit Canada for tourism, to visit family or friends, or to conduct business. The visa is usually valid for up to six months but can be extended if needed.
  • Multiple Entry Visitor Visa - A multiple entry visitor visa for Canada typically allows travelers to stay for up to six months per visit, with the option to enter and exit the country multiple times within its validity period facilitating multiple visits for tourism, family visits, or business purposes. Applicants must submit required documentation, pay fees, and undergo processing, but approval does not guarantee entry; Canadian border officials determine admission upon each arrival.
  • Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) - Instead of a visitor visa, citizens of visa-exempt countries may need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to enter Canada by air. An eTA is electronically linked to your passport and is valid for multiple entries into Canada for up to five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It's typically required for tourism, transit, or business visits of up to six months.
  • Visitor Record - A visitor record is issued to individuals who are already in Canada and wish to extend their stay as visitors, students, or workers. For example, if you're in Canada temporarily and need to extend your stay, you would apply for a visitor record to legally remain in the country beyond the expiration date of your current status. Visitor records are issued by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and provide legal status while you're in Canada.
  • Super Visa - The Super Visa is a multiple-entry visa that allows parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents to visit their family in Canada for up to two or five years at a time without the need for visa renewals. It's valid for up to 10 years and is a popular option for family reunification purposes.
  • Business Visitor Visa - Business visitors who are coming to Canada for short-term business-related activities, such as meetings, conferences, or training sessions, may require a specific type of visitor visa known as a Business Visitor Visa. This visa allows individuals to engage in business activities in Canada without affecting the Canadian labour market.

These are the main types of visitor visas and visitor records in Canada, each serving different purposes and with specific eligibility criteria and application processes. It’s important to determine which type of visa or record you need based on your nationality, purpose of visit, and current immigration status.
